Nominalization of German Verbs

List of all topics in the level A1

Nominalization, where verbs or adjectives function as nouns, is a concise topic. Some verbs, when used in their infinitive forms, can function as nouns. All these nominalized nouns are of the neuter gender. For instance, "das Schwimmen" (swimming), "das Warten" (waiting), "das Spielen" (the act of playing), and "das Lernen" (learning/the act of learning something).

You can easily identify these nouns by their capitalization and the use of neuter articles.

Some example sentences are:

Ich mag das Schwimmen. (I like swimming.)

Das Spielen ist hier nicht erlaubt. (Playing is not allowed here.)

Das Abladen ist nicht erlaubt. (Unloading is not allowed.)

Even when an article is not used with such a noun, it can still be recognized by its grammatical behavior.

Ich lerne Schwimmen. (I learn swimming.)

Schwimmen ist nicht einfach zu lernen. (Swimming is not easy to learn.)

Lernen ist ständig. (Learning is constant/permanent.)
